anti depressant [Jan. 6th, 2006|01:53 pm]
Herbal Medicine
x-posted to every natural medicine forum i know

i have a friend who has been on anti depressants, she came off them a few months a go i believe. although she no longer feels constantly depressed, she has regular 'down' days. she doesn't want to go back on anti depressants, so is looking for a more natural alternative.
however, she cannot take st johns wort as she is taking the contraceptive pill.
can anyone suggest another herbal anti depressant? what would also be good is an herbal mood lifter that she can take on those 'down' days.

many thanks

my boyfriend has a sleep disoder called periodic limb movement disorder. in his sleep he will jerk and twitch his legs and torso continuosly for up to an hour or so, stop and then after a while (sometimes a few hours) he will start twitching again. it does not bother him, but his movements keep me awake at night.
he doesn't twitch and jerk every night, he seems to go thru phases. he can go for a long succession of nights without the movement but then will start twitching again for many nights in a row. or it can just be a few one off nights randomly spaced.
can anyone offer some advice on treating this with herbal or alternative remedies. i've researched into alternative treatment but have found nothing. there are pharmaceutical medicines to treat this, but my boyfriend is not very willing to try these, and i would prefer him to use a more natural method.
can anyone help?

Chinese Skullcap [Nov. 22nd, 2005|03:40 pm]
Herbal Medicine

Does anyone have any information about Chinese skullcap? I don't even know what it is, except that my boss has gotten very, very ill the two times she's taken it. (Two different herbal products.) Wikipedia doesn't have anything, but I haven't looked anywhere else, yet. (x-posted to several communities)

Major Update and Sale! [Nov. 13th, 2005|02:33 pm]
Herbal Medicine

***Gold Dragon Herbal is having a major update and sale!!!***

I have gone in and added trial-sized bottles of almost all of my products (all except those that cannot be made in a trial size, like the eyepillows). This is a great, inexpensive way to try out one or more of my products.

I have also added a number of sets, in both full and trial-size, all of them at considerable savings (10-20%) off the individual price. These would make wonderful gifts for the holidays... or for yourself!

Also, from now until Christmas, over half of my full size items are on sale, 10-20% off! This is a *huge* sale, come and take advantage of it!

Spider Silk [Nov. 13th, 2005|03:28 pm]
Herbal Medicine

I am researching medicinal uses of spider silk, so was wondering if anyone either has used it him/herself, or know of someone who has, or can direct me to some resources to do more study on my own. I did a Dogpile search, but so far nothing I've run across is telling me what I'm looking for.

Also - is there a specific way to harvest spider silk, besides just winding it up on a stick for use later? Can spider silk be washed, or is it better to harvest the cleanest silk one can find?

I'll gladly read any more information, especially if there are questions someone recognizes that I didn't ask.

freeze or dry? [Oct. 2nd, 2005|12:21 pm]
Herbal Medicine

so this is our first year of living in washington state
and i'm still not sure how well any of my plants will survive the winter
out on our patio, both upstairs and down, in pots
- as i am used to living in texas, where anything can survive pretty much
and there's not enough room to bring anything but the rosemary inside

i have some herbs
(parsley, mint, oregano, sage)
and i want to go ahead and harvest them
so i can use them before they die

what is the best way to retain flavor?

or drying?

the flowers seem to be turning into seeds

do i let them drop?
can i pick them at any certain time?

also, the same question, but substitute cilantro/coriander (depending on your region) in the place of dill

thanks a bazillion!

Earwig control [Jul. 19th, 2005|12:43 pm]
Herbal Medicine

[mood |determined]

I hate earwigs. I did some research to see if I could find anything about pest control when it comes to these demons of the insect world and Virginia State University had this to say:
Learn about the enemy, then demolish itCollapse )

Ugh! I wanted to find natural means of doing away with these horrid things (as they tend to eat away at plants on our porch), but I think that may prove hard in the place that I live. Any ideas?

Hello everyone.
I just joined the community, because I've recently gotten into growing herbs and small plants around my apartment. One of my most beloved plants, a small feverfew plant, seems to be dying. What can I do?!
