Herbal Medicine

Hi, I was wondering if you guys know of where I can find (for cheap!) any growing lights (is this what they would be called?) that I could use to hang up over my plants during cooler temperature so I can have a garden year round?

Natural Teas [Nov. 6th, 2007|11:55 am]
Herbal Medicine

My boyfriend, Carlos, discovered Leaves & Roots a year ago and I decided today to check it out for myself. It's an absolutely wonderful little herb shop! You'd all love it, I promise.

I'm expecting and so I bought some Red Raspberry Leaf Tea to help in uterine contractions. However, I've now moved onto bigger ideas and was wondering if you could all help me.

1. I keep hearing about this Mother's Milk Tea stuff for lactating moms. What is it? Is it a single herb or a blend? Could anyone provide me with an ingredient list so I can go back to my new favorite place and create my own?

2. I have decided to make tea bags for my friends and family for the holidays. Can anyone provide me with good blends for this occasion? Anything that smells or tastes good will do. I'm actually pretty new to the tea thing... I just drink it. :]

Thank you in advance for any help. I can't wait to hear your ideas!

The good effects of Ginkgo Biloba... [Jun. 20th, 2007|11:33 am]
Herbal Medicine

Wow I see no post in almost a year! well anyhow here is something I found on a site of Gayam.com
What happened is that over the week-end I had a strong allergic reaction just after dinner. I started having this rash all over my body (starting at the arm pits). The only thing that I had eaten that was unusual was this red wine that looked kind of extremely dark, much darker than usual. So I guess I might got allergy to sulfites which are in red wine, aged cheeze, grape skin, canned tomatoes (never again!)... (but in extremely high concentration in red wine, as it is added to conserve it) ... anyhow it went away within 2 days. The Dr. gave me pills of steroid which I did not take, as I saw it went away by itself. Then I made a search to find out what was that... and now I see Gingko Could help maybe... :

Alternatives to Synthetic Allergy Drugs
Antihistamine and decongestant medicines are meant to block the histamine reaction causing the allergic symptoms. In more severe cases, steroid inhalant sprays may be recommended.

But you may not have to face a lifetime of taking pharmaceuticals. Many allergy sufferers find effective relief in natural supplements.

# Quercetin and vitamin C can act as natural antihistamines.
# Parsley can also inhibit the secretion of histamine.
# Ginkgo biloba contains chemicals that may block platelet activating factor (PAF), which plays a role in triggering allergies.
# To decrease the inflammation often associated with allergy symptoms, anti-inflammatory herbs like ginger, turmeric and Boswellia may be considered.

Herbal Medicine

Okay I have a bladder infection, and Ive been given antibiotics (a course of 6 tablets over 3 days) for it from my doctor, but I was wondering what herbal remedies there are, that also might help?
I am drinking cranberry juice and reducing all sugar in my diet too, at the moment.

Any suggestions welcome,

Question [Sep. 13th, 2006|11:41 am]
Herbal Medicine

Hi all, this is my first post here though I've been a lurker for a bit. I have a really good friend that always experiences horrible cramps around that time of month, and I suggested sending her a tea. She happily accepted the offer and I was wondering if any of you have a tea that you've used that's helped you? I have one, but I've never tried it. Thanks in advance for the help.

Cayenne and other stuff [Apr. 26th, 2006|03:13 pm]
Herbal Medicine

[mood |research mode]

Hello -

I am looking for references or resources to study about the pros and cons of cayenne for medicinal purposes. What it's usually used for, what quantities, and what happens if too much is used, or if it is mixed with another herb.

Specifically: I made a tea out of - shavegrass (diuretic); chickweed (diuretic, and weight loss); ginger (I seem to have loaned out that reference book to recall what I used the ginger for); cayenne (I read once that it was to REDUCE blood pressure - now I'm hearing it is a stimulant and is used for RAISING blood pressure - GAH!); and honey.

Does a homemade herbal tea grow too strong if it isn't drunk within a specific amount of time? Can the herbs end up being toxic with time (as in, sitting in a pitcher in the fridge)? Regular black or green tea can be in the refrigerator with little more danger than just eventually going rancid. What about the herbals?

I'll be crossposting this in a few pertinent communities - please forgive the multiples.

Not necessarily looking for anyone to do my research for me - just point me in the right direction, but if you have some knowledge about these particular things, I would of course be glad to have your input.

Thanks so much.
